Anerkennung for an Indian physiotherapy degree — step by step
Anerkennung is the official comparison of your Indian physiotherapy degree against the German qualification, carried out by the health authority of a single federal state. You submit apostilled, sworn-translated copies of your degree, transcripts, curriculum and experience letters; the authority takes a few months and issues either full recognition or a partial recognition (Defizitbescheid) naming the gaps you must close through an Anpassungslehrgang or a Kenntnisprüfung. You apply to one state, and the resulting licence is valid across Germany.
The documents you submit
- Passport (data page)
- Degree certificate — BPT, and MPT if you hold one
- Complete mark sheets / transcripts for every year
- Detailed syllabus or curriculum with hours per subject and clinical hours
- Internship certificate and registration certificate from your state council
- Experience letters from employers, on letterhead, with dates and duties
- Proof of German language level
- CV in German (tabellarischer Lebenslauf) and a declaration that you have not applied in another state

Which authority receives your file
There is no single national office. Each Bundesland has a competent authority for the health professions — a Landesprüfungsamt, Regierungspräsidium, Landesamt für Soziales or equivalent. What the decision can say

Timeline and fees
Authorities generally aim to decide within a few months of a complete file; incomplete files are the main cause of delay, because the clock only starts once nothing is missing. Fees are set per state and per case, so budget a few hundred euros and confirm the exact figure on your authority's page before applying.
Common mistakes that cost months
- Sending a syllabus without hours per subject — the authority cannot compare it and will ask again
- Ordinary translations instead of sworn translations
- Applying to two states at once, which is not permitted
- Waiting for recognition before starting German — do both in parallel
