Which German level do you actually need — B1, B2 or C1?

For Indian physiotherapists and occupational therapists the rule of thumb is: B1 makes you employable and visa-eligible, B2 gets you licensed, and C1 is only required if you enter through a German Ausbildung instead of recognition of your existing degree. Start with B1 as the first hard milestone — it is what turns a plan into interviews — then continue to B2 while the recognition file is being processed.

What each level unlocks

LevelUnlocksWhen to reach it
A1–A2Foundation; not sufficient for any application on its ownFirst 3–5 months
B1Employer interviews, employment contract, visa applicationAround months 6–9
B2The licence in most federal states; confident clinical communicationBefore the adaptation period or landing in Germany
C1The Ausbildung route, and academic or leadership tracksOnly if your pathway requires it

General German or medical German?

Authorities and exams test general German (telc, Goethe, ÖSD). But your working day is medical German: patient history, pain descriptions, handover, documentation and insurer wording. The efficient approach is to learn general German for the certificate and medical German in parallel for the job — which is how the Medical German programme is structured.

Which certificate is accepted

telc, Goethe-Institut and ÖSD certificates are the ones authorities and employers recognise most widely. Some states additionally accept a Fachsprachprüfung or specific telc B2·C1 Medizin variants for certain professions — confirm with your state authority before you book. Practise under exam conditions with our mock tests.

How long does B1 take?

From zero, most working adults reach B1 in about 6–9 months with consistent daily study and live classes, and B2 in another 4–6 months. Intensive full-time study compresses this; two hours a week does not get anyone there.

MedUniverse guides Indian physiotherapists and occupational therapists through this end to end — German language training up to B2, document translation and apostille, the recognition file, employer interviews and relocation. Book a free consultation or see current openings.
