Occupational therapy (Ergotherapie) jobs in Germany for Indian therapists

Occupational therapy is called Ergotherapie in Germany and, like physiotherapy, it is a regulated profession: an Indian BOT or MOT holder needs state recognition before practising under the title Ergotherapeut/in. The route mirrors physiotherapy — German to B1 for interviews and the visa, a recognition application to a federal state, entry on a recognition (§16d) or skilled-worker (§18a) visa, B2 plus an Anpassungslehrgang or Kenntnisprüfung, then the full licence. Demand is strong in neurological rehabilitation, paediatrics, geriatrics and psychiatry.

How Ergotherapie differs from the Indian OT role

German Ergotherapie is delivered on medical prescription and is heavily weighted towards neurological rehabilitation, psychiatry, paediatric development and geriatric care, with structured documentation for the statutory health insurers. Indian OT graduates usually have the clinical foundation but need to adapt to the German documentation culture, the prescription system and the terminology — which is exactly what the adaptation period is for.

Recognition: what the authority checks

The authority issues either full recognition or a partial recognition (Defizitbescheid) naming the gaps. You then close those gaps through an Anpassungslehrgang — a supervised, usually paid adaptation period in a German clinic — or a Kenntnisprüfung, a state examination on the German curriculum.

Frequently asked questions

Is Indian occupational therapy recognised in Germany?

It is recognised as the basis for an application. Because the German qualification is a three-year vocational training, most Indian OT degrees receive partial recognition with an adaptation measure attached.

Is Ergotherapie in demand in Germany?

Yes — occupational therapy appears on shortage lists in many states, particularly in neurological rehabilitation, paediatrics and geriatric care.

Can I switch between physiotherapy and occupational therapy?

No. They are separate regulated professions with separate licences; your recognition is tied to the profession you qualified in.

MedUniverse guides Indian physiotherapists and occupational therapists through this end to end — German language training up to B2, document translation and apostille, the recognition file, employer interviews and relocation. Book a free consultation or see current openings.
